A Typical Day at Khaya Hanci
Life on the farm follows a steady rhythm, guided by the needs of the horses and the natural environment. Here’s what a typical day looks like as a volunteer:
07:00 –7:30 Feeding & Health Check
Your day starts early with the morning feeding. This is also the time to check on the horses’ overall condition—looking for signs of injury, discomfort, or changes in behavior. It’s a quiet, grounding moment that sets the tone for the day.
07:30 – 08:00 – Breakfast Break
After the first chores are done, it’s time to take a break and enjoy a simple, nourishing breakfast together with the team.
08:00 – 13:00 – Training & Riding Sessions
The morning is dedicated to working with the horses. Depending on their stage of rehabilitation, you might be doing groundwork, lunging, desensitization training, or riding. Some sessions take place in the arena or round pen; others involve trail riding across the farm for fitness and confidence-building.
13:00 – 14:00 – Lunch Break
Take a well-deserved rest and enjoy a relaxed lunch. This is your time to recharge, reflect, or simply enjoy the scenery.
14:00 – 16:30 – Afternoon Work & Horse Care
In the afternoon, you’ll continue with horse-related tasks—this could be more training, grooming, tack cleaning or going on a relaxed Trail. There may also be maintenance tasks around the stables or riding areas.
From 16:30 – Free Time
After the day's work is done, the rest of the afternoon and evening is yours. Whether you want to relax, read a book, do some activities or just enjoy the peace and quiet—this is your time to slow down and soak in the surroundings.
Please note:
Our daily schedule is flexible and may shift depending on the weather or the specific needs of the horses. We work with nature—not against it.
Each volunteer is entitled to one day off per week, which can be used for a trip to the Kruger National Park or other activities
